Facts: Communities: Newburyport
Newburyport
Newburyport was the location of the first tea party in opposition to England’s tax on tea, well before the more famous one in Boston, Newburyport is also the birthplace of the United States Coast Guard; the first ship commissioned for the Coast Guard, the frigate Massachusetts, was built in the city. Since the early 1700s, downtown Newburyport has always been the center of commerce. Shipbuilding was one of the most important and profitable trades making Newburyport known as the “Clipper City.” Mindful of its heritage, the city launched a massive redevelopment effort in the early 1970's, reclaiming its historic commercial center of granite, brick and cobblestones, as well as its neighborhoods.
The Merrimack River is used for strolling along the downtown boardwalk, boating, fishing and bird watching. Plum Island offers miles of public sandy beaches and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, home to more than 800 species of birds, plants and animals on 4,662 acres. Maudslay State Park is a 480-acre gem along the banks of the Merrimack River, with 19th century garden plantings, rolling meadows, pine forests and mountain laurel. A seasonal outdoor theater and performance center are on the grounds.
Newburyport was the first community in the state to complete a master plan and a harbor plan. The city has a healthy, diverse economy, combining a thriving tourist trade with a strong commercial and industrial presence. The city is home to companies such as Alden Merrell, Bixby International, Samuel Cabot, Rochester Electronics, Strem Chemicals and Mark Richey Woodworking and Design.
