Bordered by the Merrimack River and the Atlantic Ocean, the town was incorporated in 1640.

Salisbury Beach is one of the state's most popular ocean beaches stretching for 3.8 miles along the Atlantic Ocean. Salisbury Beach State Reservation is a 521-acre park offering swimming, boating, fishing and camping. Facilities include a 481-site campground with bathhouses, an extensive day-use parking lot, comfort stations, over-the-dune boardwalks, and a playground and pavilion area. The facility also has two boat ramps located on the Merrimack River at the campground's southern edge. In the fall and winter, harbor seals often sun themselves on the jetty. Marinas line the river at Ring's Island, and provide a great spot for bass and bluefishing. Salisbury Beach Center has many activities for kids of all ages, with an amusement park and arcades featuring classic and state-of-the-art games.

The town is actively working on expanding its commercial and industrial base. Attractive features for businesses include Salisbury's proximity to Boston as well as its access to Interstates 95, 495 and Route 1. One of the lowest tax rates in the Merrimack Valley is another plus for both businesses and residents.
