The Merrimack Valley’s food manufacturing and processing sector has seen strong growth in recent years. In 2005, this segment of the local economy employed 2,089 people.

More than half of food production employment is in baking facilities. The second largest category includes perishable and prepared foods. The Valley’s transportation access and proximity to major markets make it a natural locale for perishable food production.
